Affiliate Marketing And Internet Shopping
The Internet has become hugely popular as a shopping venue in recent years. Online stores are convenient and offer a larger selection than their physical locations. From this trend affiliate marketing was born, and it has become a part of almost every single website on the Internet today.
Affiliation is a form of online advertising. In its simplest form, one company promotes or gives access to another company on their website, and vice versa. For example, Company A is the website for a tanning salon, and their webpage contain a link to buy tanning lotions from Company B. At the same time, Company B has a link to Company A, and so on.
There are four core members required in affiliation. These members are the vendor, network, publisher, and consumer. The vendor is the company doing the promoting on the network, which is the Internet. They are promoting the publisher, who is the affiliated company in order to attract customers.
When the merchant promotes another company, they make money. Pay per click is a very common agreement between companies. A flat rate is agreed upon, which the affiliate will pay to the merchant every time someone clicks their link on the site. The trader can potentially make huge sums of money off this arrangement because they get paid even if the person who clicked does not buy anything from the affiliate.
Conversely, performance marketing is a results driven method. In this agreement, the trader only gets paid when a customer actually buys something from the affiliate after being transferred from their site. The affiliate may pay the merchant a flat rate per sale, or a percentage of the sale.
Affiliating is essentially advertising, and advertising does not always work. Pay per click marketing can be very effective if the companies are similar, for instance, when a bar and a beer company become affiliated. If the companies have nothing to do with each other, the success can be hit or miss. With performance marketing, the same principle applies, but more work is required on the part of the merchant in order to make money from their affiliate. Companies that have a lot of money to spend on advertising do well with pay per click, but companies that have almost no budget for advertising might want to work out a strong affiliate performance partnership instead.
