Blogging And Advertising, Do They Mix?
Advertising is a great way to put a product in front of a customer, it offers information about a product or service that you would not have heard about otherwise. It can earn a lot of people a lot of money, in fact it makes the world go round. But as with most things in life, moderation is good, excess breeds contempt. If you use too much advertising when you are blogging you could send your visitors away. So do not make your blog look like a billboard
You might think that placing as many ads on the blog as you can will help your earnings explode exponentially. It does not work that way, what it will do is earn you a spot on your advertiser’s black list. Advertisers have guidelines about how many ads you can place on one web page. Generally, this can range from 3 to 5, depending on the sponsor.
If you want to stay in with your affiliate or advertising program, find out what their policies are and respect them. You will have agreed to them when you accepted the T&C without a second thought. Other wise our blog could become a ‘splog’, a blog that only contains spam. If your blog is nothing but page after page of adverts, and has little or no content, you would be better off publishing a gossip magazine.
Your content will get buried under a lot of adverts, your visitors will become distracted and frustrated, and then leave your blog without reading or clicking anything. Do not let your blog look like an infomercial, If it does you can forget about generating an authority standing in your niche.
The problem with a blog that has too many advertising units is that it can confuse the visitor. When they are confused, they’re less likely to click on an ad, much less subscribe or buy anything. That leaves your advertisers – and you – empty-handed.
A blog page can easily handle an average of three ads, which is something most advertising and affiliate programs will allow. Placed strategically, these ads can easily catch the attention of your visitors. Since there are only a few ads to look at, your visitors can easily decide which one to click on.
To use this form of advertising properly, consider the kind of programs you are running. If you are an affiliate to a brand or business then there will probably be certain restrictions you have to be aware of. Some companies prefer not to have competitor’s adverts on the same blog.
Placement and aesthetics matter. Consider some of the highest-rated blogs and study their ad placements. Where are these ads placed on a page, what are their sizes relative to one another, and to the content box, and what do these ads contain? If you have seen enough of these successful blogs, you will have picked up enough lessons to know how to use blog advertising to your advantage.
