I don’t think there’s anything more gratifying than creating a successful business. I’m sure my dad felt the same way when he started a small business back in the 1950′s. Starting a traditional business is a lot more difficult today than it was back then. It takes serious capital to buy or rent a great location and if you buy a franchise, you pay much more. Not to mention that most traditional businesses don’t show a profit for a number of years. Fortunately there is an alternative, the internet.

You may not realize it, but more and more people are making an excellent living online. It seems like just about everyone has their own website or blog. There are plenty of ways to start an online business and the best news is that it can be up and running quickly and at a fraction of what it costs to start a traditional business. The most common ways to start your own business online are to create your own product or become a representative of another companies product or service. Most new marketers choose the latter.

When you represent another’s company or business, you save yourself a lot of time, energy and money. A good company has a great product, a great website and excellent promotional materials. A better company might also have a selection of tools and resources for their affiliate marketers. After all, it should be in their best interest to foster your success. That way you can just focus on your marketing efforts.

I guess the next and most obvious question is… what should you look for in a business opportunity. If you don’t know by now, there’s a lot of garbage out there. A lot of programs that aren’t legitimate businesses. The first thing to look for is an actual product. It doesn’t need to be a physical product though. A great example would be a service of some kind. One business that I represent provides a dynamic suite of internet marketing tools. These are useful and quite necessary to any company doing business online. The greatest thing about service products are that there’s nothing to buy, stock, resell and ship. Whatever company you represent, their product or service needs to be something you believe in. Something you can get behind and feel comfortable promoting.

Another important question is this: Does the company pay on a percentage of each sale you make or is there a commission? Most companies that offer a service as their product provide residual commissions on a renewable basis. So, if you sign someone up for their service, you get a percentage of their subscription renewal each week, month or quarter. Something else to consider is how much does it cost to subscribe to the service? Even if it’s a sought after product, people are still reluctant to pay a premium for anything. On the flip side, you still need to make a decent commission and you should seek out companies that have a sufficient pay plan.

I’ve been online now for eight years and the first four were the hardest. Reason being that I had to figure it out all by myself and the internet has changed a lot over those years. I now have three products of my own and a small army of affiliates who represent them. When I started out I was an affiliate marketer. As an affiliate, I learned the most important lessons. Like what the best online marketing methods were and how to use them to my advantage.

Starting out as an affiliate is the path that I recommend. You can make good money representing the right products and services. I created enough of an income online being an affiliate, that I didn’t have to work for anyone any longer… but I do. I work in a hardware store and I love it. My dad owned a hardware store when I was younger, so I guess it’s in the blood. One of the things that makes my job so rewarding is that there’s no pressure. When you don’t need a job for your survival, it actually makes working fun. (Working… Fun?!)
