Breaking down a larger goal into a few smaller milestones is a classic technique used in business and the process works equally as well when related to personal endeavors, such as weight loss. Instead of saying, “I need to lose fifty-pounds in three weeks!”, you’ll increase your chance of success by breaking the process down into milestone events.

YOU NEED MILESTONES

Wanting to lose fifty-pounds in three weeks isn’t realistic. You know that! But losing fifty pounds within four to five months is realistic and doable. The importance of setting your goals to gain success begins with ‘not setting yourself up for failure’. Likewise, why cheat yourself by prolonging a goal simply because someone else tells you it isn’t achievable? Losing an average of ten pounds of fat, per month, over a period of five months is doable.

KEEP IT TO YOURSELF

Large businesses make plans weekly, monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, annually and in additional increments of five and ten years, respectively. Growth oriented businesses usually achieve their goals because they have become adept at identifying the resources they’ll need to ensure success and see the plan through to completion. The resources you’ll need are highly individualized, but doing something as simply as identifying a food budget for your five month fifty-pound weight loss plan, will help you identify more than just how much money you have to spend. You’ll need to do what a business does and identify what you’ll be buying and how much it costs each day, each week, each month. Line item by line item. This process forces you to clearly decide what you plan on eating and how much you’re able to spend to lose those fifty-pounds.

Of course you’ll need more than the quick introductory list we’ve devised here. Like any business looking to achieve a goal, you’ll need data, you’ll need support systems and you’ll need to be ready to take a risk at success. Never underestimate the importance of setting your goals to gain success with weight loss or with anything else you wish to accomplish. One of the most important tools you’ll require is kindness and compassion. Make being good to yourself an overall lifestyle goal and allow weight-loss to become part of that mission. Invest the same level of time and talent in yourself that you invest outside of yourself by setting goals that work for you.
